Purpose/Goals

  • To promote and protect the welfare of all persons with mental retardation.
  • To distribute information that promotes a better understanding of the special needs of all persons with mental retardation.
  • To support the continued operation of all Texas State Supported Living Centers for persons with mental retardation, group homes, and other residential settings with frequent quality monitoring regardless of setting.
  • To maintain an awareness of current and revised Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services [DADS] policies, procedures and rules that pertain to the care and treatment of all persons with mental retardation.
  • To be aware of state and national legislation which affects the rights of persons with mental retardation.
  • To keep members informed about all things that affect the care and welfare of their mentally retarded family member
  • To ensure that the parent/guardian's legal right of placement choice for their mentally retarded family member is respected and honored.
  • To be involved as individuals and as an organization in maintaining the highest standards of quality care for persons with mental retardation in all residential settings.
  • To support and encourage families to obtain guardianship for their family member who is mentally retarded.
